ESSSAY :D

How authentic are the mythological references in Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief?

This question asks if mythological references in the movie Percy Jackson and the lightening thief are authentic or not. Though there are many references in the movie the main questions asked are, what does the lotus flower have to do with Greek Mythology? How do Athena and Poseidon connect? Why do Athena and Medusa hate each other? All of which are important questions in Greek mythology as well as the film.

In Greek mythology, the lotus-eaters, also referred to as the lotophagi were a race of people from an island near North Africa dominated by lotus plants. The lotus fruits and flowers were the primary food of the island and were narcotic and addictive, causing the people to sleep in peaceful apathy.

In the film the lotus eaters are casino workers and they do all they can to keep people (including the main characters.) in their casino, this is done by feeding people the lotus flower a type of cake, it dulls the sense’s almost like a drug and is extremely addictive making who ever consumes it want to stay. This is some what different to the description because in the film it does not make consumer “sleep in peaceful apathy” also the workers do not look African in any way. Over all though the lotus eater and flower reference is very authentic, they have stuck to most all information and what has been changed has been done so, so as to fit into the 21ST Century society.

Athena is the God of wisdom and battle strategy and Poseidon is God of the sea and storms. They connect because they are both part of the big 12 of Greek gods “The Olympians” also because both Athena and Poseidon wanted to be patron deity of Athens. To prove her worthiness for the honour, Athena caused an olive tree to spring up on the citadel of Athens, the Acropolis. Poseidon sought to outdo her by striking the ground with his trident and causing a spring of water to gush forth. But as he was god of the sea, the water was salty. Athena's gift to the Athenians was considered to be more useful, so she became the city's patron deity.

In the film it is mention a couple of times that Athena and Poseidon hate each other, the reason given is proven above, that the both compete for patron god of Athens and when Athena won Poseidon never got over his grudge. In the film though they also connect because Athena’s daughter Anna Beth and Poseidon’s son Percy are friends and allies in the movie (and both demi gods). The authenticity of Athena and Poseidon’s connection in the film is very real to that mentioned in Greek myths.

In Greek Mythology Athena and Medusa hate each other because Athena was behind turning Medusa’s hair to stone the legend says that Medusa was always extremely vain and eventually Athena got sick of it and confronted her about it. Medusa tried to point out that her beauty was an inspiration to those around her and that she made their lives better by simply looking so lovely, but Athena silenced her. “Nonsense,” Athena retorted, “Beauty fades swiftly in all mortals. It does not comfort the sick, teach the unskilled or feed the hungry. And by my powers, your loveliness shall be stripped away completely. Your fate shall serve as a reminder to others to control their pride.” And with those words Medusa’s face changed to that of a hideous monster. Her hair twisted and thickened into horrible snakes that hissed and fought each other atop her head. “Medusa, for your pride this has been done. Your face is now so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it will turn a man to stone,” proclaimed the goddess, “Even you, Medusa, should you seek your reflection, shall turn to rock the instant you see your face.” And with that, Athena sent Medusa with her hair of snakes to live with the blind monsters -- the gorgon sisters -- at the ends of the earth, so that no innocents would be accidentally turned to stone at the sight of her. In the legend Perseus keeps it in a bag because it can still turn you to stone - I'm pretty sure he used it against his enemies.

In the film this myth is mention when the main characters come face to face with Medusa. On seeing Anna Beth she says to her “Daughter of Athena. You have such a beautiful hair. I used to have like that before. I was courted, desired by many. But that all changed, because of your mother-who cursed me, who turned me into this monster.” Although in the film Percy Jackson the main character kills Medusa which in Greek mythology as stated above does not happen, another Demi god Perseus kills Medusa. Though this could be taken as Perseus is Percy Jackson although Perseus lived in ancient time, the film however could have taken the demi god Perseus and altered so as to fit the film. Also Medusa is said to have been sent to the end of the earth to live, but in the film the main characters find her in the middle of America. Though for the sake of the film plot to run smoothly America is seen as the end of the earth, as the place that they find her in a Statues and Figurines shop which all the statues and figurines found there are people that Medusa has turned to stone. There fore Medusa’s looks and powers are authentic in the film as well as the fact that Athena cursed her and turned her hair into snakes, but the fact that Percy kills her is not and her location is also not authentic to original Greek mythology.

Through the analysis of the film Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief and the many aspects of Greek mythology mention through out the film. I have come to the conclusion that the mythological references in the movie Percy Jackson and the lightening thief are authentic, although there is some unauthenticity it is mostly done so the film can fit into the 21ST Century world that we live in and so the plot can run smoothly and quickly.

Essay Question

How authentic are the mythological references in Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief?

Focus on a few major points rather then the 25 or so that I have.
I think that all the Information on Medusa would be interesting, as well as the Lotus-eaters cause they are pretty mad. Athena might also be an interesting topic to do cause there is a lot mentioned about her and Medusa and if I am doing Medusa then I could connect them two together. :)

What has the lotus flower have to do with Greek Mythology?

In Greek mythology, the lotus-eaters , also referred to as the lotophagi or lotophaguses or lotophages , were a race of people from an island near North Africa dominated by lotus plants. The lotus fruits and flowers were the primary food of the island and were narcotic and addictive, causing the people to sleep in peaceful apathy.

Is there a temple of Athena in Nashville?

Yes there is a temple of Athena in Nashville :D

What is a Lernaean Hydra and is it true that if you cut of one of its heads 2 more grow back?

In Greek mythology, the Lernaean Hydra was an ancient nameless serpent-like chthonic water beast (as its name evinces) that possessed seven heads — and for each head cut off it grew two more — and poisonous breath so virulent even her tracks were deadly.. The Hydra of Lerna was killed by Hercules as one of his Twelve Labours. Its lair was the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, though archaeology has borne out the myth that the sacred site was older even than the Mycenaean city of Argos since Lerna was the site of the myth of the Danaids. Beneath the waters was an entrance to the Underworld, and the Hydra was its guardian. = this is why in the movie it comes after Percy and his friends because Hades (god of the underworld) is trying to get the lightening bolt from Percy.

Percy Jackson killed Medusa?

Percy Jackson did not kill Medusa, other Demigod Perseus did, his name is kind like percy though, butyeah he didn't kill her. :)

if you open Medusa’s eyes dead or alive they still work?

http://www.essortment.com/all/medusamyth_rmql.htm

It is said that after the death of Medusa, Perseus was said to bring her head to Athena after having used it in battle to defeat his enemies. Athena cast the head into her shield and there it remained.
But i couldn't find anything that said that her eyes still turned people to stone even after her death.
So im thinknig that the movie only said that so they could kill the Lernaean Hydra later in the movie.

Did Medusa and Poseidon use to be together?

It is said that Medusa was seduced by Poseidon, disguised as a horse, in one of Athena's temples.

what are Gold drachmas. How come the boat guy to the underworld takes them as payment and not real money?

An ancient Greek currency unit found in many Greek city states from Classical times on.
I think that in the movie the boat man Charon the aged boatman who ferried the souls of the dead across the River Styx to the gates of the underworld. Took the drachma’s because it was the currency of his time.

Persephone ?????

In the movie it is said that; "he (Hades) forced Persephone to marry him. Keeps her prisoner, she hates it there so she has 'secret' visitors. She keeps the pearls hidden for them all over the world and these pearls provide a quick exit from the underworld.”
I couldn’t find a lot on Persephone except for this;
Persephone, The only daughter of the goddess Demeter. While Persephone was out picking flowers, a chasm opened revealing Pluto. He quickly pulled her into the underworld and made her his wife and Queen of the Lower World. Demeter scoured the land looking for her daughter and once she discovered what had occurred, she was grief-stricken. She wandered the land alone, bringing famine to the earth in her grief. The people called out to Zeus for assistance and he answered by ordering Hades to release Persephone. However she had already eaten a pomegranate seed. Having fed upon and drank from the goods of the underworld, she was obligated to spend a third of the year with Pluto. When winter came and earth was cold and barren is the time Persephone resides in the underworld and Demeter travels the earth yearning for her only daughter. At Persephone's release in the spring, the earth begins to grow flowers again.

I can honestly say I do not believe it to be Persephone's fault, She did not will her kidnapping. Persephone did not have a choice as a Young and probably Naive girl.

Does it show the mother Demeter was irresponsible for leaving her daughter Persephone alone?

Perhaps, However I think the mother had believed her daughter Persephone would be safe. After all there is no reason for Pluto to Pick flowers. Unfortunately he found Persephone though. Demeter clearly cares and loves her daughter Persephone, to be searching for her.

Which doesn’t really match the description given in the movie, so I then Google searched Hades wife and I found this description;

Hera is Zeus wife and sister. She was raised by the Titans Ocean and Tethys. She is the protector of marrage and takes special care of married women.
Hera's marriage was founded in strife with Zeus and continued in strife. Zeus courted her unsuccesfully. He then turned to trickery, changing himself into disheveled cuckoo. Hera feeling sorry for the bird held it to her breast to warm it. Zues then resumed his normal form and taking advantage of the suprise he gained, raped her. She then married him to cover her shame.
Once when Zeus was being partcularly overbearing to the other gods, Hera convinced them to join in a revolt. Her part in the revolt was to drug Zeus, and in this she was successful. The gods then bound the sleeping Zeus to a couch taking care to tie many knots. This done they began to quarrel over the next step. Briareus overheard the arguements. Still full of gratitude to Zeus, Briareus slipped in and was able to quickly untie the many knots. Zeus sprang from the couch and grapped up his thuderbolt. The gods fell to their knees begging and pleading for mercy. He seized Hera and hung her from the sky with gold chains. She wept in pain all night but, none of the others dared to interfere. Her weeping kept Zeus up and the next morning he agreed to release her if she would swear never to rebel again. She had little choice but, to agree. While she never again rebeled, she often intrigued against Zeus's plans and she was often able to outwit him.
Most stories concerning Hera have to do with her jealous revenge for Zeus's infidelities. Her sacred animals are the cow and the peacock. Her favorite city is Argos.

Which matches up the description in the movie better, so as a guess I’m thinking that the director or who ever combined the two people in Greek mythology and make them one character in the movie, also there is nothing mentioned about Persephone’s pearls, so again I am guessing that that was but in there as a way of the main characters to get out of the underworld.

Progress

Okay so I've answered about half of the questions, this weekend I am going to finish watching the movie, write up the other half of the questions and hopefully finish answering them all so I can start writing the essay by next week. :P

Why do Poseidon and Athena really hate each other

Both Athena and Poseidon wanted to be patron deity of Athens. To prove her worthiness for the honor, Athena caused an olive tree to spring up on the citadel of Athens, the Acropolis. Poseidon sought to outdo her by striking the ground with his trident and causing a spring of water to gush forth. But as he was god of the sea, the water was salty. Athena's gift to the Athenians was considered to be more useful, so she became the city's patron deity.
>This is the reason given in the movie so once again the movie has gotten the correct information< :)

Who is Ares why are his sons so violent?

Ares is the god of war. I am guessing that his sons are so violent because they take after him in that sense. :)

who is Hermes ?

Hermes is the messenger god, as well as the god of travelers, roads, livestock, merchants, young men, and thieves. Hermes is the leader of souls, or psychopompus, who conducts the dead to the realm of Hades in the underworld. His symbol is his wand, the kerykeion or caduceus, and his winged sandals, and he is also known as god of dreams. His counterpart in Roman mythology is Mercury.

Centaurs?

In the movie the Centaurs are half man, half horse. One of the main characters is a centaur called Chiron who is a famous centaur in Greek mythology
“Centaurs were also wild and lusty. Chiron, by contrast, was intelligent, civilized and kind He was known for his knowledge and skill with medicine. A great healer, astrologer, and respected oracle, Chiron was said to be the first among centaurs and highly revered as a teacher and tutor.”
In the movie Chiron is a museum professor who when Percy Jackson goes to the museum with his school gives them a lesson on Greek mythology and Demigods.

Athena Questions.

Is it right in saying she is the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy
Did Athena turn Medusa's hair into snakes?

http://www.amazonation.com/AthenaW&W.html

She was the goddess of protection, writing, music, the sciences, sculptors, potters, architects, wisdom, arts and skills, renewal, true justice, protection (both psychic and physical), prudence, wise counsel, peace, embroidery, horses and oxen, snakes, pillars, trees, olive boughs, battle strategy.

http://www.dltk-kids.com/world/greece/m-story-medusa-and-athena.htm

Medusa tried to point out that her beauty was an inspiration to those around her and that she made their lives better by simply looking so lovely, but Athena silenced her with a frustrated wave.

“Nonsense,” Athena retorted, “Beauty fades swiftly in all mortals. It does not comfort the sick, teach the unskilled or feed the hungry. And by my powers, your loveliness shall be stripped away completely. Your fate shall serve as a reminder to others to control their pride.”

And with those words Medusa’s face changed to that of a hideous monster. Her hair twisted and thickened into horrible snakes that hissed and fought each other atop her head.

Minotaur do these creature work for Hades??

The descriptions of Minotaur are all correct to the image seen in the movie. Everything found though said that there was only one Minotaur: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/minotaur-in-greek-mythology.html
And I couldn’t find anything that suggests that the Minotaur works for Hades, I am guessing they just wanted any kind of scary freaky looking Greek monster to work for Hades in the movie...

Satyr (is Percy’s protector) are they really known as protectors. Half goat half man.

In Greek mythology the satyrs are deities of the woods and mountains. They are half human and half beast; they usually have a goat's tail, flanks and hooves. While the upper part of the body is that of a human, they also have the horns of a goat. They are the companions of Dionysus, the god of wine, and they spent their time drinking, dancing, and chasing nymphs. The Italian version of the satyr is the faun, while the Slavic version is the Ljeschi. = in the movie Grover (the satyr is Percy’s “protector”) this is not mention in Greek mythology as ever happening, he also mentions that he is a junior satyr because his horns haven’t grown through yet. This also isn’t mentioned.
Although in the cartoon movie Hercules, his trainer and gaurdian as suhc is a satyr.

Greek Satyr

Movie Satyr

what exactly is a "fury" does it match the image shown in the film.

Furies or Dirae in Roman mythology were female chthonic ("in, under, or beneath the earth") deities (a postulated preternatural or supernatural immortal being) of vengeance or supernatural personifications of the anger of the dead. They represent regeneration and the potency of creation, which both consumes and empowers. A formulaic oath in the Iliad (iii.278ff; xix.260ff) invokes them as "those who beneath the earth punish whosoever has sworn a false oath". Burkert suggests they are "an embodiment of the act of self-cursing contained in the oath".[

Two Furies, from an ancient vase.

The fury in the movie

The descriptions found on the internet don't make what is seen in the movie, as is shown by the pictures. Although the fury in the movie is sent by Hades god of the dead which matches the description.
"There are 12 Olympian gods. The big three are the brothers Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. They attained power by overthrowing their father Kronos, chopping him into little pieces. the three gods have been rivals ever since, always arguing always threatening war."
this statement is all correct although it is a summerised version

"The children of these unions were half god, half human. Demigod. Many became great heroes like Hercules and Achillis and Perseus."

Part of the dual nature of Greek heroes that gave rise to the modern "Demigod" a repeated theme in the story of their birth—is a double paternity: one parent is a regular mortal, and another is a God. Thus the heroes have liminal qualities that enable them to have great strength, to cross the threshold between the worlds of the living and the dead yet return safely, and to mediate long after their death between human and divine.

"Hercules and Achillis and Perseus."
this statement is also true Hercules, Achillis and Perseus were all famous demigods.

what is the summer solstice?

The Summer Solstice occurs exactly when the Earth's axial tilt is most inclined towards the sun the day on which the Summer Solstice occurs is the day of the year with the longest period of daylight. Thus the seasonal significance of the Summer Solstice is in the reversal of the gradual shortening of nights and lengthening of days. The summer solstice occurs in June in the Northern Hemisphere and in December in the Southern Hemisphere.

what is meant when Zeus says "I will send him to the depths of Tartarus" what is tartarus.

In early Greek cosmogony (a theory or story of the origin and development of the universe, the solar system, or the earth-moon system.) TARTAROS was the great pit beneath the earth. Tartaros was secured with a surrounding wall of bronze set with a pair of gates, guarded by the hundred-handed Hekatonkheir giants, warders of the Titanes.
